Nerve Conduction Study of Radial Nerve

Abstract
The objective of this study was to standardize the technique, increasing the clinical significance of the nerve conduction study in radial motor nerve between the axilla and the elbow.
In this study, direct measurement of the radial nerve from the axilla to the elbow was made from six dissected cadavers. Theses values were compared with the values obtained by anterior surface tape measuring from the axilla to the elbow across the biceps muscle(A method), obstetrical caliper measurement over this region(B method), and a surface determination approximating the course of the radial nerve posteriorly in the radial groove of the humerus (C method).
The mean conduction distances obtained by these three measuring techniques were 17.9 ¡¾ 1.7cm, 23.6 ¡¾ 1.9cm, and 16.8¡¾ 1.5cm respectively. The mean anatomical length of radial nerves of the cadavers was 18.0¡¾1.2cm.
We conclude that the assessment of length of the radial nerve from the axilla to the elbow across the biceps muscle by means of anterior tape measurement is more precise and compares favorably with the actual anatomical length of the radial nerve.
